the republican campaign has to win, i believe, if mitt romney's to become president, let's see if the poll numbers in that state of ohio which we're going to see as this week proceeds, let's see if those numbers have tightened there because that's going to be a key number for us. >> it certainly must be a huge wake-up call for the obama campaign, these pew research poll numbers that have just come out. >> yeah. >> so what do they do now? they've got a vice presidential debate coming up thursday night. >> they've got to have a couple of good presidential debates and they all believe that the president can do it and clearly the president himself understands that he didn't perform the way he would have hoped in the first debate. i do think that this puts a little bit of pressure on joe biden to perform well. having talked to my sources in the biden camp, they say they're sticking with their game plan, that is to draw contrast with paul ryan. that they intend to do that. that they intend to talk about foreign policy as well as domestic policy. and that they want to continue to draw the contras

, kentucky. that's where it's going to happen. new polls out to talk about. they show that the romney/ryan team is gaining ground where they need it the most, in the swing states. romney is closing the gap in ohio and pulling ahead by a point in virginia. mitt romney is in front in another swing state, colorado. let's get right to cnn's dana ba bash. she's already in kentucky with nap good morning, dana. >> reporter: good morning, soledad. well, paul ryan knows full well the pressure is on him to keep the momentum you just illustrated going. and he's actually been preparing, effectively, i'm told, since the day he was picked by mitt romney. reading, studying as much as he can. he's been doing mock debates with his sparring partner, who is a former solicitor general, the renowned litigator, ted olsen, with hotels from oregon to florida. i spoke to him exclusively, soledad, about his prep and it is pretty clear that this kind of preparation is nothing new for him. telling you what a source i spoke with about how you prepare for hunting. you wash your clothes in unscented detergent, show

policy credibility, the obama camp is comparing mitt romney to chevy chase and our most recent poll shows voters give the president a 7-point edge on world affairs. is a challenger, any challenger, be it mitt romney or anyone else, obliged to do this, obliged to become the commander in chief like more a moment and give a foreign policy speech right before the election? >> yes. mitt romney has been aggressively pursuing the foreign policy area because he thinks the president is vulnerable. yes, the president did manage to kill osama bin laden on his watch, but in certain other areas the romney folks if you listen to all of the national security advisers, the foreign policy advisers, they think the president is very vulnerable, especially the notion of leading from behind. they say a romney administration would not lead from behind but rather lead from out front, and they're going to go after the president aggressively. you will see this in the course of romney's address which has been very carefully prepared and carefully written and you certain saw to a certain degree when romney did his

poll, mitt romney has gained eight points. you can see on the right side of the screen back in september. on the left side of the screen is where they are now, while the president dropped one point. and new hampshire, he has gained four points according to a wmur poll. what's the strategy, going into the vice presidential debate, what's the plan to turn this around? >> we don't think anything needs to be turned around. this race was going to be close. our strategy is to get out there, energize and engage our voters. when people look at the choice it's going to be pretty clear to them that president obama is a better choice for the middle class. we feel very confident in our ground game and we're implementing that across the country. the president was in ohio yesterday, the voter registration deadline, encouraging people to go vote, early vote, go register. you'll be out in florida tomorrow and that's what we're focused on, not getting whipped up and down with the ups and downs of these polls. we know there will be many more ups and downs in the coming days. >> you don't have

new hampshire. the latest arg poll of likely voters shows mitt romney at 49% and president obama at 46%. that's in florida right now. that's within the sampling error. meanwhile, with just 25 days to go before election day there are some serious concerns about a republican financed voter registration effort in the state. cnn's crime and justice correspondent joe johns is joining us now with the latest on a criminal investigation making waves right here in washington. joe, what's going on? >> wolf, he is a veteran gop operative who just doesn't seem to go away. a few weeks agoaway. a few weeks ago, a wave of bad publicity hit the waves. he was disavowed by the republican national committee. tonight, some democrats that criticize his tactics say they're worried he may still be operating in several key battleground states under a different company name. >> it all started with nathan sprule. they came under fire for providing false information at the supervisor of election office. they responded by throwing him under the bus even though he denies wrong doing. by that time the republican pa

some new numbers this morning on that race. the recommend montana poll shows president obama with a two-point lead over mitt romney. what's interesting in the numbers is only one democrat has won arizona in the past 60 years and that was bill clinton in 1996. both of the vermontal candidates are back in their home states today. paul ryan is in wisconsin and president biden is in delaware. at a fund-raiser yesterday biden talked about the difference between the candidates and he offered this. quote, every presidential race every race comes down twho they thing has character and conviction. it will not surprise you on that score. i don't even think it's close between president obama and governor romney. >> let joe be joe is what president obama said before the debate and that's skpanlly what "saturday night live" had fun with last night. >> mr. biden, i know you're under a lot of duress but it would do everything good if you -- >> you don't scare me, shark eyes. you think you're tougher than me because you do the px 90 workout? let me tell you. there's jim strong and old manner. you want

obama than paul ryan did for mitt romney. >> but when you look at the cnn/orc poll that asks the question, who is in touch with the problems of people like you -- this is an area in which joe biden is considered to be very, very strong, right? he is the guy who talks to the middle class, did that a lot last night in the debate. it was actually paul ryan who was ahead. the polling there was 51% for paul ryan, 44% for joe biden. doesn't that make it impossible to read that as a victory for the democrats in an area that joe biden is supposed to be really strong in? >> i think these snap polls right after the debate aren't necessarily the best snapshot of how voters really feel about these debates. and they take a look at it over the course of time and see whose facts added up and whose facts didn't add up. when you saw paul ryan really pressed on the math of their tax plan, it opened that argument all the over again. because he really just couldn't make the math work. and he couldn't explain it in a way that the american people could be comfortable with. now, he says that there'
